Ingredients

  • 1–2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 8–16 oz filtered water
  • fresh lemon or lime juice, to taste (optional)

Equipment

  • mason jar or drinking glass
  • measuring spoon
  • liquid measuring cup
  • mixing spoon

Method

  1. Add the chia seeds to a mason jar or drinking glass.
  2. Pour the filtered water over the chia seeds.
  3. Stir immediately and vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds so the seeds disperse evenly instead of clumping at the bottom.
  4. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes, then stir it again to break up any remaining clumps.
  5. Allow the chia water to soak for at least 10 additional minutes, or refrigerate it overnight for a smoother texture.
  6. Add fresh lemon or lime juice to taste, stir well, and drink. If the mixture is too thick, dilute it with additional water.

Notes

Start with 1 tablespoon of chia seeds per day if you are new to high-fiber foods, then gradually increase to 2 tablespoons. Always soak chia seeds for at least 15 minutes before drinking. Stir immediately after adding the water, then stir again after 5 minutes to prevent clumping. Add more water if the drink becomes too thick. Drink plenty of plain water throughout the day. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and shake well before serving.
Optional variations include lemon chia water, apple cider vinegar chia water, cinnamon chia water, ginger-lemon chia water, and berry chia water. This recipe is not a miracle weight-loss drink and should be used alongside a consistent, balanced diet. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before regular use if you take blood-thinning or blood-sugar medication, have swallowing difficulties, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are experiencing an IBS or diverticulitis flare-up.
